Our science
The science behind a stronger skin barrier
Every claim we make has a measurement behind it. Here is the research that shaped B-Restore™: what your skin barrier actually does, why the microbiome matters, the three actives we chose, and what an independent lab recorded over 24 hours.
The living layer
Your skin has an ecosystem, and it has opinions
Sitting on top of the barrier is a community of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms: the skin microbiome. They are not passengers. They help set your skin's pH, they occupy space that less friendly organisms would happily take, and they talk constantly to your immune system. When that community is balanced, skin tends to behave. When it is disrupted, skin tends to react.
It trains your immune system
The microbiome helps calibrate immune responses in the skin, which shapes how strongly your skin reacts to what it meets each day.
It works with the barrier
A balanced microbial layer supports the barrier's ability to hold water, which is why microbiome and hydration are so tightly linked.
Balance shows on the surface
Research associates microbial imbalance with skin that is more reactive, more congested, or more prone to flare.
Antimicrobials disrupt it
Antibiotics and antimicrobial products do not discriminate. Prolonged use can thin out microbial diversity along with the organisms you wanted gone.
So do harsh products
Strong detergents and stripping preservatives shift the skin's pH and strip the natural oils that beneficial microorganisms depend on.
Stress and age shift it
Microbial composition changes across a lifetime, and sustained stress affects barrier function too. Neither one is a failure on your part.
Keeping skin balanced and comfortably hydrated is the most reliable way to look after that community. Which brings us to what is actually in the jar.
Meet the formulaB-Restore™ formulation technology
Three actives, chosen for one job
B-Restore™ was formulated to work on both layers at once: the microbial community on the surface and the physical barrier beneath it. Theresa spent her career as a formulation chemist long before she needed this cream herself, and every ingredient in it had to earn its place.
Supports a Healthy Skin Microbiome
Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate
Postbiotic · Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate
The World Health Organization and the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization define probiotics as live microorganisms. They are genuinely useful, but skin's own structure means whole probiotics struggle to do much once applied topically, and they are notoriously difficult to keep stable in a formula.
Our patented process sidesteps the problem. Instead of living cells, B-Restore™ carries Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate, the bio-active material found inside probiotic cells, in a form that stays stable in the jar. It is there to support a balanced skin microbiome and help beneficial bacteria hold their ground.
- 10 billion microorganism culture
- Lactic acid removed during processing, for a gentler feel on reactive skin
- Post-fermented with hyaluronic acid to increase cytosol content
Supports Skin's Natural Ceramide Production
Upcycled Bilberry Seed Oil
Vaccinium myrtillus seed oil
Bilberry, the wild European cousin of the blueberry, is grown for the deep purple pigment in its skin and pulp. The seeds are usually treated as waste. They should not be. Bilberry seed is unusually rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, including alpha-linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid the body cannot make for itself.
We use oil pressed from those recovered seeds. Omega-3, omega-6 and oleic acid all contribute to the formation of ceramides, the lipids that hold the barrier's structure together. Using the seed rather than discarding it means less waste for exactly the same result.
- Rich in omega-3, omega-6 and oleic acid
- Supports the skin's own ceramide formation
- Pressed from seed recovered from the food industry
Calms and Comforts Reactive Skin
Tasmanian Pepper Berry
Tasmannia lanceolata fruit extract
Tasmannia lanceolata grows in the mountains of south-eastern Australia, on rocky, wind-exposed ground, through winters most plants will not tolerate. Hardy things tend to be interesting.
The berry contains polygodial, a naturally occurring compound studied for its calming effect on discomforted skin. In B-Restore™ it is there for the feeling as much as the function: that first moment where skin simply stops complaining.
- Contains polygodial, a naturally occurring active
- Studied for its calming effect on discomforted skin
- Harvested in south-eastern Australia
The full ingredient list is printed on every carton and shown on each product page. Natural-origin percentage is calculated by weight.
Independently measured
What an independent lab recorded
B-Restore™ was tested by Princeton Consumer Research across 24 hours, comparing treated skin against an untreated site on the same participant. Two things were measured: how much water the skin held, and how quickly it lost it.
Skin moisturisation
Corneometer units · higher is better
Moisturisation peaked an hour after application and was still well above the untreated site a full day later.
View the measurements
| Time point | Untreated area | B-Restore™ Barrier Cream | Difference vs untreated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline | 18 | 18 | — |
| 1 hr | 18 | 72 | +339% |
| 8 hrs | 18 | 63 | +293% |
| 12 hrs | 18 | 55 | +216% |
| 24 hrs | 18 | 42 | +147% |
Transepidermal water loss (TEWL)
g/m²/h · lower is better
Water loss fell by roughly a third within the first hour and held there. The untreated site drifted upward across the same period.
